Mariana, Juan de
1536 - 1624
Jesuit historian and political theorist at Toledo, author of De Rege et Regis Institutione (1599). Mariana argued that political sovereignty derives from the people and that a tyrant who destroys the common good may be legitimately deposed. His treatise De Monetae Mutatione (1609) was one of the first rigorous analyses of currency debasement as a form of taxation without consent, anticipating modern critiques of inflationary finance.
