Ikigai
Also known as: 生き甲斐
Formulated by Japanese Philosophy (2009)
Definition
A Japanese concept meaning 'a reason for being' or 'a reason to wake up in the morning.' Ikigai represents the intersection of four fundamental elements: what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. When these four elements converge, one finds their ikigai: a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and meaning in life. The concept emphasizes finding joy in life through purpose and has been linked to longevity and well-being in Japanese culture.
The popular Western representation of Ikigai as a Venn diagram. Note: This diagram was created by Marc Winn in 2014 and does not originate from traditional Japanese philosophy, though it has become widely used as a tool for finding purpose and career direction.
