Ikigai

Also known as: 生き甲斐

Formulated by Japanese Philosophy (2009)

Definition

A Japanese concept meaning 'a reason for being' or 'a reason to wake up in the morning.' Ikigai represents the intersection of four fundamental elements: what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. When these four elements converge, one finds their ikigai—a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and meaning in life. The concept emphasizes finding joy in life through purpose and has been linked to longevity and well-being in Japanese culture.

The popular Western representation of Ikigai as a Venn diagram.
